"You have written JAMB more than once and you are probably fed up and feel like giving up. Funny enough, you always meet the cut off, you just can't figure out why you were not admitted. Whereas, people who scored lesser than you have been admitted and you weren't. Why this unfair treatment? You think it's best if You forget school for now and face other things. You just can't waste reasonable years of Your life hoping on admission that is not even certain even if you pass"

You don't have to be frustrated before you secure admission, there are other legal, approved and certified means by which you can secure admission into the university to study any course of your choice apart from the well known means - JAMB.

This thread extensively intimates you on other means you could engage to secure admission into the university (aside the popular means - JAMB).

THE CONCEPT OF ADMISSION

If we go back in history, we would recall that years ago, there was nothing like JAMB. Once you graduate from secondary school, you just apply to your choice university but then, the process had a glitch. The secondary school graduates outnumbered the capacity (total number of students universities can hold) of the Nigerian universities.

However, measures such as establishment of more universities, Creation of JAMB, etc were created to correct this glitch and this brings us to why JAMB was established.

WHY WAS JAMB ESTABLISHED?

As we have earlier stated, the number of secondary school graduates were more than the number of students the university can hold. For instance, 10,000 students graduated from secondary school in 1999, and the maximum number of students Nigerian university can hold is 7,000, the only way to get that exact figure from the number of applicants is to examine them(JAMB) and pick the best 7,000. This method seemed efficient although not for long. How? The figure of secondary school graduates keeps increasing. You should remember that out of the 10,000 students that applied in 1999, only 7,000 were admitted and 3,000 were shortlisted based on performance. They are left no other choice but to rewrite JAMB with the new set of secondary school graduates (say 10,000). So 10,000+3,000=13,000.

This makes it that 13,000 students will be examined through JAMB in the year 2000, and only 7,000 will the admitted, shortlisting about 6,000. The figure keeps adding up as year goes by and thus, the concept of POST UTME was established to further shortlist students, because the number of students that pass JAMB are more than the number of students Nigerian Universities can take. Having realized this, some who didn’t reach cut off or reached but doesn’t want to be shortlisted buy their way in either via connection, money, etc. thus, the advent of corruption in the JAMB admission process.

In order to correct this glitch, the idea of pre-degree programmes came up in order to keep students brain active after leaving secondary school before they secure admission instead of staying at home, doing nothing but the programme wasn't efficient for long because of the capacity that Nigerian University can admit to 100 level. Hence, advance level programmes such as IJMB, JUPEB, NABTEB A-level, etc. were adopted.

WHAT ARE ADVANCED LEVEL PROGRAMMES?

Advance level programmes are platforms that student can engage in to secure admission into 200Level. These programmes in itself, is more or less 100Level because students are taken through series of lectures based on 100Level syllabus for a period of 6-9 month, after which they sit for their examination. A result will be issued on completion of the programme which can be used in combination with O’level result to apply for Direct Entry admission in any Nigerian institution.

The most common of these programmes are IJMB, JUPEB and NABTEB A’Level. While IJMB and JUPEB is accepted in virtually every Nigerian universities – be it federal, state or private, NABTEB A’Level is only applicable for Technical Schools.  Read  more

WHY ADVANCED LEVEL PROGRAMMES?

These programmes were created to in order to provide alternatives to secure university admission. For instance:

Last year (2018), about 1.5 million students applied for JAMB, and only about 600,000 (if not less) were admitted. Logic says, the remaining 800,000 that was not admitted will re-apply for Jamb, joining the 1.5 million (rough estimate) that will be registering this year (2019).

1,500,000 + 800,000 = 2,300,000 (2.3 million)

As this goes on and on year in, year out, and the figures will keep increasing, thereby making admission more competitive and hard via jamb. This was the reason for which Advanced level programmes such as IJMB moderated by ABU Zaria and JUPEB moderated by Unilag were established - to lessen the burden on jamb. You can check your JAMB Brochure to confirm Advanced level programmes as alternatives for university admission. It is there and even recommended by JAMB itself, the reason some students rewrite JAMB 3-7 time (or even more) is because they are oblivious of this programmes and they doubt it.

HOW DOES ADVANCED LEVEL PROGRAMME WORK?

Usually to secure admission into university, students are to combine their O'level results with JAMB as a requirement for admission. However, advanced level programmes doesn't warrant JAMB i.e one doesn't need to sit for JAMB examination to be admitted via JAMB. It is the combination of your O'level and your A'level result. for instance, someone who enrolled for IJMB only needs his/her IJMB result in combination with his O'level result to apply for DE admission into his/her choice university.

SINCE NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY CAPACITY IS 600,000, WHAT MAKE 200LEVEL ADMISSION ANY EASIER?

Yearly, about 600,000 students are admitted into universities all over Nigeria but not all of them make it to 200Level. Why? About 60,000 – 100,000 students are usually sent back home for various reasons such as:

  • Cultism
  • Clearance (some are nabbed for using fake result)
  • Examination malpractice and Misconduct
  • Extreme failure
  • Failure to pay school fees
  • Failure to accept admission
  • Failure to comply with school rules
  • And lots more
  • Other reasons may include sickness and death.

This depicts that there are about 100,000 spaces that students can fill in at 200Level and these spaces are reserved for Direct Entry students (Advanced Level, ND and NCE graduates). However, as at 2018, only about 15,000 students registered for Advanced level programme (IJMB, JUPEB, NABTEB) which is relatively low as compared to the number of admission seeker. Hence, we could deduce that people barely know about these programmes and the benefits they hold.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The Basic Qualification for Enrolment is a minimum of five (5) Credit Passes at the Senior Secondary Certificate (SSCE) /General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level in subjects relevant to the desired university programme or course of study. Nonetheless, students with awaiting result can also apply.

BUT I ALREADY REGISTERED FOR JAMB!!!

Advanced level programme doesn't in any way hinder JAMB because they are two different programmes: JAMB on one hand offers admission to 100Level, and Advanced level programmes on the other hand, offers admission to 200Level. Therefore, students can register for both JAMB and Advanced level programmes together.

I hope this thread has been able to expose you to other alternatives you could employ to secure university admission aside JAMB. If you have questions you would like to ask, kindly leave a comment below.
